ControlLogix Redundancy Switchover Fault

AB-1756-REDUND

ControlLogix enhanced redundancy system experienced a switchover or detected a fault in the redundancy configuration. The secondary controller may not be synchronized with the primary.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check redundancy module LEDs on both chassis — both should show SOLID GREEN when synchronized
  2. 2 Verify redundancy cable (1756-RMCxx) connections at both ends — fiber cables are fragile
  3. 3 In Studio 5000, check Controller Properties > Redundancy tab for sync status and fault details
  4. 4 Verify both controllers have identical firmware versions and identical I/O tree configurations
  5. 5 If switchover occurred, check fault log on both controllers for root cause
  6. 6 Re-synchronize by right-clicking the offline controller and selecting 'Synchronize'
  7. 7 Verify BOTH Ethernet paths are connected — redundancy requires dual network paths

Field Trick

ControlLogix redundancy systems MUST have identical firmware, identical I/O trees, and identical network configurations on both sides. If you make any change to the primary (add a module, change a parameter), you must synchronize to the secondary before it takes effect. One missed sync and you're not redundant anymore.
