AS/RS Crane Travel/Lift Brake Fault

ASRS-BRAKE1

Crane travel or lift motor brake is not releasing or not engaging properly. Brake feedback switch indicates incorrect state.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check brake coil voltage — measure at the coil terminals when commanded to release
  2. 2 Manually release the brake (using manual release lever) — if brake mechanism moves freely, coil is the issue
  3. 3 Check brake air gap — most brakes have an adjustment nut for air gap setting (typically 0.5-1.0mm)
  4. 4 Inspect brake disc for wear — measure friction material thickness against minimum spec
  5. 5 Check brake feedback switch — verify it changes state when brake is released
  6. 6 If brake coil is burned, check what caused the over-current — usually a stuck brake disc or seized mechanism

Field Trick

AS/RS crane brakes have a manual release lever for emergencies — usually a hex bolt or lever on the brake housing. If a crane is stuck at height with a failed brake, you can manually release the brake to lower the mast. But someone must be ready to catch the load with a forklift — the mast will drop under gravity when the brake releases.
