Ground Fault on Power Circuit

GEN-ELEC1

Ground fault relay or GFCI detected leakage current to ground on a power circuit. Circuit tripped for safety.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Identify which circuit tripped — check ground fault relay indicator
  2. 2 Disconnect loads one at a time to isolate faulted circuit
  3. 3 Megger each load and its cable: >1 MΩ phase-to-ground = good
  4. 4 Check for moisture in junction boxes, motor terminals, and conduit runs
  5. 5 If motor, may need drying out or rewinding
  6. 6 If cable, repair or replace damaged section
  7. 7 Check ground fault relay sensitivity — may need adjustment for VFD circuits

Field Trick

Disconnect all loads from the circuit. Reset the GFR. If it holds, reconnect loads one at a time. The one that trips it is your ground fault.
