Tank Level Sensor Fault

GEN-LEVEL1

Process tank level sensor reading is erratic, stuck, or has lost signal. Tank level cannot be monitored accurately.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Clean sensor face/antenna — remove product buildup
  2. 2 Check sensor reading vs visual level check — compare actual to displayed
  3. 3 Verify 4-20mA signal at PLC input — should track with level changes
  4. 4 If float switch, manually actuate to free stuck mechanism
  5. 5 For capacitance probes, remove and clean the probe rod
  6. 6 Replace sensor if cleaning doesn't restore accurate reading

Field Trick

For ultrasonic level sensors, angle the sensor 2-3 degrees off vertical. This prevents false echoes from the liquid surface directly below and gives a cleaner signal.
