Safety Muting — Mute Condition Not Met

SAFE-MUTE1

Safety muting sequence for a light curtain or safety device did not complete correctly. Muting sensors did not detect product in the correct sequence to allow product to pass through the light curtain without stopping the machine.

Probable Causes (ranked)

Fix Steps

  1. 1 Check both muting sensors — both must activate in the correct sequence and timing for muting to engage
  2. 2 Verify muting sensor alignment — they must detect the product, not each other (cross-beam or parallel beam configuration)
  3. 3 Check muting LED on the safety controller — should illuminate only when both conditions are met
  4. 4 If product size changed, readjust muting sensor positions to detect the new product at the correct conveyor position
  5. 5 Verify muting timeout parameter — if product takes too long between sensors, muting cancels
  6. 6 Check that muting lamp (if equipped) illuminates when muting is active — required by most safety standards

Field Trick

Muting requires EXACTLY two sensors to activate in a specific sequence and timing window. If someone adds a third sensor 'for safety,' it actually breaks the muting logic. Muting is designed with exactly two sensors to prevent bypass — one person can't hold both sensors at the same time from outside the danger zone. Don't add extra sensors without understanding the safety logic.
